Morla Lynch fue en todo el sentido del término un escritor de diarios; es decir, más que la carrera literaria, más que el diseño de una obra, lo que atraía su interés y lo instaba a escribir era el simple hecho de ser un testigo del paso del tiempo, de las conductas humanas, del aspecto de las ciudades y de los campos. En sus mejores páginas siempre se filtra una curiosidad material por la realidad evanescente, aun cuando se enfrenta a la aparición tumultuosa de los sucesos históricos. Así, se puede detectar la recurrencia de un anhelo: desaparecer para el mundo formal del trabajo, quedar fuera del alcance de secretarias y teléfonos, no hacer más que pasar el tiempo sumergido en el fondo de un café, mirando transcurrir la vida.
Se podría decir que en su caso la escritura del diario fue un mandato paterno: cuando aún no cumplía diez años, su padre, el político Carlos Morla Vicuña, le regaló —para que escribiera cuanto se le pasara por la cabeza— un cuaderno empastado con el retrato de la reina de Bélgica en la tapa: un objeto prodigioso que incorporó sagradamente a su vida. Durante 50 años fue fiel a la escritura del diario —un hábito, una compañía, un fantasma— y solo lo abandonó cuando murió su hija de nueve años.
Uno puede pensar que es el tipo humano opuesto al de Pérez Rosales, “el chileno aventurero”, dado que su vida se fue urdiendo en un mundo de salones, urbanidad, diplomacia y sociabilidad quintaesenciada. Pero esto no lo protegió de los embates ni de la intensidad de la existencia. Fue un hombre de palabra antes que de acción, pero se comportó, en los días difíciles, como un agente, un gestor, un operador de la realidad en sus niveles más urgentes.

SOBRE LA COMPILADORA: Cecilia García-Huidobro Mc. Estudió Pedagogía en Castellano y Periodismo en la Universidad Católica de Chile. Luego obtuvo el grado de Magíster en Literatura en esa misma universidad. Entre 1983 y 1997 estuvo a cargo de la Revista Universitaria, primero como editora y luego como directora. A partir de 1997 se desempeñó durante diez años como editora de la Revista de Libros del diario El Mercurio.
Ha escrito artículos y ensayos en diversos medios y entre sus publicaciones se cuentan: Portarretrato (entrevistas con intelectuales latinoamericanos); José Donoso. Artículos de incierta necesidad; Vicente Huidobro a la intempmperie; El escribidor intruso; Edwards Bello. Un transatlántico varado en el Mapocho; Moneda Dura. Gabriela Mistral por ella misma; Tics de los chilenos. Vicios y virtudes de nuestros cronistas nacionales.
En 2012 publicó Una historia de las revistas chilenas (Universidad Diego Portales) en coautoría con Paula Escobar y un capítulo del libro de VVAAAA Mujeres que viajan solas.
En 2000 recibió el Premio Cámara Chilena del Libro “por su destacada labor en el mundo del libro y la literatura”.
En la actualidad es Decana de la Facultad de Comunicación y Letras de la Universidad Diego Portales y Directora Ejecutiva de la Cátedra Abierta creada en 2007 en homenaje a Roberto Bolaño.
